Potted lettuce
Until quite recent times, consumers in Hungary have associated the word lettuce with the traditional, pale green cabbage lettuce. Over the past few years, however, a number of different kinds of lettuce have become available in stores nationwide, following the example of many other countries.
It did not only mean the appearance of new types and colour varieties, but has also changed our idea of lettuce as a product.
We offer the following varieties:
In countries located north of Hungary the sale of potted lettuce is common and widespread, and is held much more advantageous than the sale of traditional (cut) lettuce.
Consumers often find that unrooted plants lose their freshness and their leaves become shrivelled very quickly. Seeing this, you will not think any more that lettuce is a delicious, appetizing and healthy vegetable.
Lettuce grown and sold in pots remains fresh much longer despite unfavourable lighting conditions, as the roots can suck up the water lost by the large leaves.
Due to the limitations of the growing medium, potted lettuce does not grow into large heads. Therefore we chose to grow various types of looseleaf lettuce from spring to autumn that do not form heads. The leaves of the different types of looseleaf lettuce overlap each other loosely and do not form a head.
If the leaves overlap each other more tightly, those in the center of the plant may be paler than the rest, but this type of lettuce does not form a heart notwithstanding.
