
Name: Lollo loose-leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa)
Origin: Mediterranean region of Europe, Africa
Description: Both the light green and dark red leaf varieties have deeply curled, heavily frilled leaves that have a crisp texture and a rich, yet not bitter flavour.
Culinary use: Fresh leaves by themselves or mixed with other types are excellent for salad bases. Also popular in sandwiches. Have a great aesthetic value and are often used for decorating dishes.
Medicinal use: The plant has a high mineral salt and significant calcium, magnesium and iron content. Also has a considerable beta-carotine, vitamin B1, B2, niasine, B6, C, as well as Na, K and P content.
Cultivation and harvesting: Until use, potted lettuce stores well in the refrigerator in its original packaging for up to 3-4 days or, if taken out of its packaging, in a light and cool corner of the kitchen window sill. Needs frequent watering.
